TOKY and I are all in. This is an insidious way to squelch healthy competition. TOKY will boycott Lee publications and do our best to steer our advertising clients to buy space in StLIndiePA publications whenever possible. Additionally, we will boycott any retailers that opt in to this distribution plan.

Keep the public informed. Scary situation.

As a small business owner, I would like to comment on the STL Distribution (STLD)agreement. What is not being said is…if a retailer/distribution site signs the STLD agreement with its exclusivity clause, it will force the independent/free publications in St. Louis to use the STLD racks or not offer their publications at this location. If the free publication opts to use the STLD racks, it will cost the publication $20 to $25 per location for STLD’s services. This is cost-prohibitive for many free publications that typically distribute to 500 or more locations. For example, let’s do the math…using 500 locations, the monthly distribution cost for free publications is approximately $2,000 per month, or $4 or less per location. If the free publication is forced to use the STLD racks, their cost of distribution would rise from $2,000 to $10,000 to $12,500 per month, or as previously stated $20 to $25 per location. This adds $8,000 to $10,000 per month of bottom-line cost, which is more than the average monthly profit in most small businesses.

Given this extra overhead, what do you think the impact of the STLD contract and agreement will be on St. Louis’free publications? My opinion is that this extra cost could be disastrous to St. Louis, resulting in fewer free/independent publications offered or copies printed, fewer distribution sites for the general public to easily pickup their favorite publication, and less discretionary income that the free publications can put back into the St. Louis economy in the way of business development, production, reporting, staffing, and facilities.

In closing, if you are a retail location that distributes free publications, thank you for your support for free and independent publications. It is the value of these publications and your willingness to help distribute them, that brings customers to your establishment.

If you need any help in this matter please let me know. All the publishers should know me since I have distributed your magazines throughout the years and have helped everyone out at some point.
